It’s…
Five-Minute Friday!
And the five minute Friday prompt today is…
Ordinary
GO!
I used to pass a Pepperidge Farm cookie truck every time I went to town, and see sweet invitation on its side: “Never have an ordinary day!”
I’ll do that, I decided. Good advice! Especially in the dead of winter. Especially when gray chill stretches long and yearns for spring…
So in the days to follow I…
—went walking in sunlight on a country road, longer than ordinary,
—came home and read The Man Who Planted Trees… and felt like planting trees all over our hill, come spring.
—stood watching through a window at 2 AM, heavy snowfall blanketing down magical, lit by driveway spotlight
—hauled a mystery box from attic to declutter, finding treasures: Garfield comics, Garfield stuffed toy, tiny model airplanes from son’s childhood…
—sat in a local indie bookstore’s easy chair, sipping coffee, previewing a book
—met a friend for breakfast and exchanged encouragement
—took extra time with dinner prep, making “ordinary” a feast—by adding refreshing touches…
It doesn’t take much to turn a blah day splendid. And every day that’s ordinary is also extraordinary somehow. Even today.
So today I think I’ll look for the extraordinary—and create a bit of it myself. Today I think I’ll…
STOP
Love that 🙂
I will have to remember that tonight when I wake up to feed the baby.
When I remember to do that and try to find something special, I can thank God, and the world seems a magical place and God is near.
When I don’t, I often feel sorry for myself and the world is boring and life is a drag.
So much lies in our perspective, doesn’t it, Omily? This was good for me to remind myself of now, too. So many sad, even horrid pieces of news and reality have assailed me lately, it’s good to see God still has His hand in Life, and a good place to see it is those “magical” un-ordinary (even if small) things. Extraordinary blessings to you!
Think I will join you in creating this extraordinary day!
Seeing Pepperidge Farm in a new extraoridnary way. Love how their cookies make me say yummy but now realize they feed more than the tummy! LoL!!!!
Had fun visiting here.
Such a great reminder! There is beauty everywhere.
Chuckling at your little rhyme, Paula. We do need to feed not just our empty tummies, but also our famished souls, don’t we? May you have an extraordinary day. May you have a whole bunch of them!
Yes, Eileen, there IS beauty everywhere, and how often has my racing pell-mell toward goal accomplishment blinded me to it! I suspect that looking for—or making—one little extraordinary thing in my day each day would open my eyes and heart to much more of it than is contained in that one thing. In fact, I think I’ll try it, now for the month of March!
Great post and reminder… This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it…
Excellent point, Sylvia! We’re surrounded by so much extraordinary, and so many opportunities to make that a part of our daily lives, yet we’re so often content to live in the ordinary! I need to learn to seek this, too . . . Thank you for sharing, friend!
